DEPARTMENT:  Water-WPC, City of Cartersville

JOB SUMMARY:  This position is responsible for operating trailer dump truck and other equipment used to process and transport materials to disposal sites.  

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Operates a trailer dump truck to haul treated bio-solids to disposal sites.
  • May operate a belt filter press to aid in bio-solids disposal.
  • May operates a front-end loader, tractor, and other equipment used to facilitate the wastewater treatment process.
  • Inspects trailer dump truck, press, and gauges on a daily basis to ensure that proper levels of air pressure, oil, and other fluids are maintained. 
  • Washes and performs preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

  • Skill in operating and maintaining equipment such as a dump truck and front-end loader. 
  • Skill in defensive driving techniques.
  • Skill in using hand tools.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Knowledge of state and federal regulations relating to bio-solids disposal.
  • Knowledge of city and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of water pollution control equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Possession of a valid commercial driver's license (CDL-A) issued by the State of Georgia
Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations.
Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:  The WPC Supervisor assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions.  The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES:  Guidelines include state Environmental Protection Division and federal Environmental Protection Agency regulations, departmental policies and procedures, and safety rules and regulations.  These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY:  The work consists of related duties in operating a dump truck, front-end loader, and other equipment.

SCOPE AND EFFECT:  The purpose of the position is to transport sludge to disposal sites and to assist in the maintenance of plant facilities.  Successful performance helps ensure the safe disposal of bio-solids. 

PERSONAL CONTACTS:  Contacts are typically with co-workers. 

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS:  Contacts are typically to give or exchange information.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The work is performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, climbing, bending, crouching, or stooping.  The employee must lift light and heavy objects and use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  The work is performed primarily outdoors, where the employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, raw sewage, machinery with moving parts, and occasional cold or inclement weather.  The work may require the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
