Welcome to Cartersville's Local Governance

Cartersville takes pride in its effective Council-Manager form of Government, a model that has propelled its progress since 1917. Serving as a pioneering example in the State of Georgia, Cartersville's commitment to efficient governance remains unwavering.

Our Governing Body: Mayor and Council The heartbeat of our city's governance is our Mayor and City Council, collectively providing legislative direction. Elected by citizens and serving part-time, they bring their dedication and insights to shape our city's course. In the absence of the Mayor, the Mayor Pro Tem, selected by Council, steps in to ensure uninterrupted leadership.

Guiding Hand: City Manager Working in harmony with the Mayor and Council, the City Manager is appointed by the Council and entrusted with executing their established policies. This alignment ensures that our city functions smoothly, carrying forward the vision set by our elected representatives.

A Model for Success Nationwide Our Council-Manager system represents the most popular local government structure in the United States. With Cartersville being the first in Georgia to embrace this model, we've set the standard for efficient governance that prioritizes citizen representation.

The Responsibilities We Shoulder The Mayor and Council have a diverse range of responsibilities that reflect their commitment to the city's growth:

  • Establish Policy: From adopting ordinances to approving budgets and determining the millage rate, they lay the foundation for our city's development.
  • Appoint/Supervise Officials: They carefully select and oversee officials for boards, commissions, and authorities dedicated to serving Cartersville.
  • Provide Community Leadership: Engaging with constituents, they offer invaluable community leadership by understanding needs and concerns.
  • Feedback and Guidance: Directing city initiatives and programs, they ensure that Cartersville's growth remains in line with citizens' aspirations.
