The City of Cartersville Fire Department would like to thank the public for the $15,189.07 raised in the 2007 “Give Burns the Boot” Drive. This Boot Drive is an annual event held by city and county fire departments in the state of Georgia. All proceeds from the drive go towards helping burn victims and fire prevention education. The community’s contributions made it possible for Cartersville’s Fire Department to receive a fifth place trophy, which they accepted on February 5th at the Firefighters Appreciation Day luncheon at Georgia State University. The awards are based on a per capita basis, which equated to $257.44 per Fire Department staff member. This year’s first place winner was Dekalb County, however, Cartersville’s firefighters believe Cartersville will win that award in the future. The City is very proud of the Fire Department for their hard work in this event and thankful for the people of Cartersville and their donations.

In addition to receiving an award at Firefighters Appreciation Day for the Boot Drive, the City of Cartersville Fire Department Honor Guard was given the honor of presenting the colors at the State Capital. This is an opportunity that has a two year waiting period. Firefighters Appreciation Day is an annual event where the governor recognizes firefighters across the state for their heroic acts. Cartersville’s Fire Department received a couple of individual awards throughout the day, and won numerous prizes.

On February 6th, Governor Perdue slightly eased water restrictions for the state of Georgia. According to the Governor, “Georgians have demonstrated their dedication to a culture of conservation. It is important to continue to encourage conservation with the 10 percent reduction, which I believe we can achieve while also supporting industries that are so essential to our state.”

In addition to discussing the 2030 Visioning Plan, City Council members prepared a list of short term goals at the recent Council Retreat. The results have been prioritized by Council. 5 Year Goals

The City of Cartersville and Bartow County continually strive to work together to provide an exceptional, safe community for the residents of this area. A perfect example of this is the recent partnering of Cartersville’s Police Department and Bartow County’s Sheriff Department to form the joint Bartow-Cartersville Drug Task Force. The results have been amazing. Here is a brief summary of January’s results (please note: all seizures pending court proceedings):

· Total drug arrests: 43
· Drugs removed from circulation: Marijuana: 3,619.1 grams (7.97 lbs.); Cocaine: 243.05 grams (.5 lbs); Methamphetamine: 51.5 grams
· Total value of drugs seized: $25,705.00
· U.S. Currency seized: $1,655.00
· Vehicles seized: 1
· Firearms seized: 3
· Search warrants: 1
· Knock and Talks: 4
· Probation searches: 2

Total charges by the Drug Task Force include:
· Possessions of Marijuana: 12
· Possessions with intent (Marijuana): 6
· Possessions of Cocaine: 9
· Possessions with intent (Cocaine): 6
· Trafficking Cocaine: 5
· Possessions of Methamphetamine: 8
· Trafficking Methamphetamine: 3

In addition to the above numbers, the Bartow-Cartersville Drug Task Force has made two arrests for child molestation and one arrest for stolen vehicles. Thomas Culpepper, Cartersville’s Chief of Police, says, “The benefits of the combined drug task force are already being seen. This is also creating a better relationship between the Cartersville Police Department and Bartow County Sheriff Office. This is good for the community; this is removing dangers to our community and making this a better place.”
