The Cartersville Water Department has three intake structures on the face of Lake Allatoona Dam. Lake Allatoona is a Corps of Engineers' lake that was placed in service in 1960. Lake Allatoona is an 11,000 acre lake that has one of the highest traffic counts of all Corp of Engineers lakes. The Etowah River was dammed to create this lake. It was initially built to help control flooding and provide power generation. Recreation and water supply have become very important functions for this lake. The lake was constructed to control flooding, provide power generation, recreational and water storage for municipal use.
