Surge Protection

The Cartersville Electric System offers residential customers three-way protection. Service point of entry surge arrestors will be installed at the electric meter for power and at similar points for telephone and coaxial cable. Participating customers will pay an additional $9.99 per month on their utility bill and sign an agreement to use the service for three years or pay a cancellation fee.

Power surges are sudden, unexpected increases in electrical voltage. They can be caused by storms, by fallen power lines, even by a neighbor’s appliances or nearby business. Indoor plug-in types of surge protection can protect personal computers and other pieces of household equipment with small plug-in (point-of-use) surge protectors. What about major appliances such as your dishwasher, washer/dryer, microwave, and refrigerator? What about the central heating/air conditioning unit? The point-of-use units provide incomplete protection against these surges. Even if these voltage surges are not strong enough to destroy electronic components in home appliances and consumer electronic devices, these frequent smaller surges can slowly break down wiring insulation. This causes premature device failure or faulty operation. The major appliances within the household need surge protection as well.
